There's a phrase that gets thrown around on job sites: "It's built to code." Here's what that actually means. Building code is the legal floor. It is the worst house you are allowed to build without breaking the law. Not the target. Not the standard of care. The floor. Say that out loud and it starts to sound different. "Built to code" is the construction equivalent of a restaurant telling you they passed their health inspection. Good — that's the bar we hoped they'd clear. B

The internet is full of stock floor plans. Thousands of them. At first glance, many seem interchangeable—similar square footage, similar renderings, similar layouts. But after spending time in construction and studying how homes are actually built, I realized something important: Most stock plans are designed to sell a drawing set, not to help someone build a better house.
